(Provocative Title) Second Amendments from the Founding Father
(Hook) After the recent shooting in Oregon Community College, UCC, authors Stephen G. Gilles and Nelson Lund stated, “the Second Amendment…is not unqualified, but its core purpose is to protect the individual’s interest in self-defense” (1). (Bridge) The Gilles and Lund’s message is Second Amendment, rights to bear arms, is written by the Founding Fathers as a form of gun control.(Divided Stasis Thesis Sentence) (Opponent’s Claim informed by three scholarly sources) Although opponents of gun control states Second Amendment will not protect its people if the people cannot get the weapons needed for self-defense, (Rhetor’s Main Claim informed by nine scholarly sources) the Second Amendment does intend to protect its people by (Reason/Support 1) ensuring weapons of self-defense land in the right hands, (Reason/Support 2) preventing the government from taking citizens’ rights, and (Reason/Support 3) allowing citizens the right to self-defense.

Gun Control Research Position Paper
1. Prewriting: Steps in the Writing Process
Step 1: Who is my audience?
My audience is those who believe gun control should be enforced and those who are unsure on whether or not gun control should be tightened. Those who agree with my stance should also be included as part of the audience as it will agree with those audience. This paper only serves to reach out and enforce previously held beliefs, not arguing or persuading the audience.
Step 2: What is my purpose?
My purpose is to convince those who think gun control should be loosened or eliminated and that enforcing gun control laws is the prevailing stance.
Step 3: What is my premise?
My premise is gun control should become stricter for a few reasons. First, the Second Amendment prevents the government from taking our rights. Secondly, more gun control does not lead to more violence. Thirdly, less gun control can and will lead to more violence.
Step 4: What is my chosen quotation?
My chosen quotation is “the Second Amendment…is not unqualified, but its core purpose is to protect the individual’s interest in self-defense.”

Cornish, Paul. "Gun Control." The World Today, 64.10 (2008): 30-31.
After reading the article, I have learned that the author’s view on gun control includes many statistical numbers about gun control. The statistic this article provides are the number of gun related cases, which has increased from five percent to sixty five percent over the century. Cornish’s idea in order to end these gun-related cases is to tighten the laws and regulating the illegal trades that are happening internationally from the black market, which I agree. If the United States is trying to fix the problem, then it must start within itself. If people will go to extreme measures to get what they want, then the government must be stopping the problem from within our own soil.

Gilles, Stephen G, and Nelson Lund. "Insurance as Gun Control?" Regulation, 36.3 (2013): 38.
After reading the article, I have learned that the use of Second Amendment and how the rights to bear arms are legitimate and basic rights for every human. Gilles and Lund believe using gun as a use of self-defense is effective and mandatory even if accidental shootings do happen. The article also discussed the use of the Second Amendment and how it protects its people by giving the people their basic freedom of rights to bear arms. The interpretation and the true meaning of the Second Amendment are verifiable and should be carefully considered before dismissing the Second Amendment as flawed. As it has stated, The Second Amendment protects “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms.”

Schuman, Howard, and Stanley Presser. "The Gun Control Paradox." Contexts, 12.2 (2013): 68-69
After reading the article, I have learned when it comes to statistic data, the majority is pro-gun control. However when it comes to the debate of whether or not gun control should be tightened or loosened, the opponents of gun control are the ones who usually have more debating evidences. Statistics from the article shows that over eighty percent of the people who favors the gun control law and over sixty percent of the people who are against gun control committed no action to the cause in either donation or written complaints. Although the importance of this issue has gone extremely far in terms of verbal actions, not much has been done in terms of physical actions.

Kleck, Gary. "Mass Shootings in Schools The Worst Possible Case for Gun Control." American Behavioral Scientist. Sage Journals, 1 Jan. 2014. Web.
After reading the article, I have learned that gun control is needed to prevent incidences, such as the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting, from happening again. Tightening gun laws and making sure guns are in the right hands is critical because if they fall into the wrong hand the consequences are exponential. As opposed to tightening the gun control laws, Kleck propose to change and reform the gun control laws rather than to loosen or tighten it. The article states that although gun control laws were advocated and implemented into the law, these laws only avoids ordinary gun violence rather than mass shootings.

Paradis, Gilles. "Gun Control Redux." Canadian Journal of Public Health / Revue Canadienne De Sante'e Publique, 101.3 (2010): 192.
After reading the article, I have learned that guns control in Canada is not as enforced as in the United States, resulting in the shooting and killing of fourteen young women, causing an outrage in the public. This allowed the Canadian government to tighten up gun control policy to try to reduce the shooting cases to the minimal. Yours truly believes the amount of gun related incidences directly reflects the number of cases avoided. When gun control laws are enforced, the rate of crime regarding guns drops. As Gilles stated in the article, “the repeal of gun registration would be a major mistake and a blow to public health and to the safety of [civilians].”
Kopel, David B. " Mexico's Gun-Control Laws: A Model for the United States?." LexisNexis® Academic & Library Solutions. N.p., n.d. Web.
After reading the article, I have learned the model of gun control Mexico use as is more efficient and effective. He also proposed that the United States could use parts of the Mexico’s gun control law and implement it into our own laws. These laws include “The inhabitants of the United Mexican States are entitled to have arms of any kind in their possession for their protection and legitimate defense, except such as are expressly forbidden by law, or which the nation may reserve for the exclusive use of the army, navy, or national guard; but they may not carry arms within inhabited places without complying with police regulations.” The citizens are allowed to have the rights to protect themselves after notifying police regulations, ensuring the safety of its people.

Morabia, Alfredo, and Michael C Costanza. "Evidence-based Gun Control." Preventive Medicine, 55.4 (2012): 261.
After reading the article, I have learned the Colorado Theater shooting is a result of insufficient gun control laws. Gun control needs to be reworked and revamped in order to stop innocent shootings. It also shows how easy it was for shooters to penetrate a public place and perform a mass shooting. These incidences are not an impossible mission as the statistics has proven that “gun-related death rate of 1.66 per 100,000 per year in the U.S. vs. 0.14 in 25 other industrialized countries (CDC, 1997),” proving these mass shootings are highly preventable. The article also emphasize how these changes cannot be done by one person and needs to be fixed using evidence-based policy.

Levy, Robert A. "Doctors for Gun Control." Regulation, 31.4 (2008): 7
After reading the article, I have learned not all the gun owners’ use their gun for what it is normally intended for, which is to protect the owner. Statistics in this article show suicide rates and crime involving guns are possible because of the permitted guns issued by the government. This shows the government needs to give a more thorough background check and reassure the permits given out to make sure these people will not become harmful once acquiring the gun. The government has the burden of proof to show this gun control law does work by issuing righteous gun permits to the right hands as guns fall into the wrong hands will become harmful. As Levy stated, “government has the burden of proof in justifying gun regulations that might infringe on Second Amendment rights.”

DeGrazia, David. "The Case for Moderate Gun Control." Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal, 24.1 (2014): 1-25
After reading the article, I have learned the use of moderate gun control is more efficient than the use of extreme gun control. DeGrazia explained the general arguments against gun control by stating the faults in extreme gun regulation as a violation against human rights and how arguments for extreme gun controls are false and cannot be done. Although DeGrazia does not believe in completely eliminating gun control, the article does not support the use of extreme gun control as opposed to a moderate gun control. The article argues for moderate gun control and states it is needed in order to protect this country’s safety using the least amount of violence and danger while also being efficient.

Unknown, "Gun Control." Contexts, 2.4 (2003): 60.
After reading the article, I have learned how the statistics of people’s different viewpoints on gun policy has changed over the past few decades. The statistics show the people who think laws should be stricter have dropped over the past two decades from eighty percent to fifty percent. People who think the laws should stay the same have risen from twenty percent to forty percent. The people who think that the laws should be less strict has risen, dropped, and then risen although never passing ten percent over the past decades. This essential statistic emphasizes on how people have changed their opinion on gun control policies to a much more con-gun control stance over the last twenty years. The idea of enforcing gun control policies has died down.

Boylan, Michael, Don Kates, Ronald Lindsey, and Zbigniew Gugala. "Debate: Gun Control in the United States." Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 471.12 (2013): 3934-3936.
After reading the article, I have learned how the many scholarly educated individuals debate whether or not gun control should be enforced eliminated, or limited. All these individuals have different opinions in regards to how gun controls should to be treated. As Michael Boylan PhD stated, “Gun possession by ordinary citizens of the world is a potential threat to public health. This is a result of the damage coefficient that guns possess,” arguing pro-gun control. On the other hand, Don B. Kates JD argued “Russia… banned handguns in the 1920s, yet Russian murder rates have always exceeded the United States.” This article shows two drastically different viewpoints as to how gun policies should be treated while offering string opinions form either side from many scholarly individuals.
Hargrove, David S, and Roland P Perdue. "A Broader Perspective of Gun Control." The American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, 85.3 (2015): 225-227.
After reading the article, I have learned a more general, unbiased, and objective view on gun control, but neither have been too persuaded on which is to be implemented to ensure efficient results. Each have drastically opposing viewpoints which makes this article extremely informational as both sides of the gun control speaks up and debate amongst each other on this controversial issue. As Hargrove argued for gun control, Perdue opted with a much lenient approach on how gun control should be regulated. While Hargrove and Perdue has parallel goals of reducing crime violence, each proposed drastically different solutions. Yours truly agree with the stance Hargrove is presenting.
